Leadership Academy for the Water Sector

Looking to make the transition into a supervisory role? The Leadership Academy is a series of one-day courses specific to the water industry designed to provide new supervisors with the skills necessary to be great leaders.

Taught by instructors with decades of experience in the water industry, the courses will cover everything from HR basics to delegation and how to lead an effective team. 

 

The first level includes four one-day modules. Upon completion of all modules, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.

Leadership Academy for the Water Sector - Level I

Each module allows participants to earn up to 6 hours of continuing education credits.

 

 Module 1

  • Making the transition from employee to supervisor
  • Differences between supervision, project management, and leadership
  • How to conduct interviews
  • HR basics: how to stay within legal parameters
  • Who is the boss and modeling behavior
  • Participatory management
  • Time management

Module 2

  • Setting direction

  • Enabling effectiveness and organizing work systems
  • Communication

Module 3

  • Performance management
  • SMART goals
  • Measuring performance
  • Customer focus
  • Workforce satisfaction, development, and training

Module 4

  • Problem solving
  • Decision making process
  • Working in a team
  • Leading a team
  • Data based solutions

 

Level II – Executive Leadership Module

Level II is designed for those with supervisory experience looking to expand their leadership skills and will cover the following topics:

  • Strategic planning
  • Succession planning
  • Coaching
  • Business accountability
  • Managing managers

Level II will be taught by Jim Meeks, Director of Compliance and Auditing Services, Charleston Water System. Jim has 30 years’ experience in HR, Performance Improvement and Organizational Development systems.
