Water & Wastewater Volunteers Still Needed for Hurricane Dorian Response in Bahamas

The Charleston-based non-profit Water Mission has a continuing need for professional Water and Wastewater Volunteers to assist with the restoration of water/wastewater utility services in the Bahamas. Here are some of the essential facts:

  1. Volunteers must have a current passport. Passports must have at least 6 months of validity at the time of travel.

  2. Water Mission will provide transportation, room and board (granted, it is just a step above camping out, but it is a disaster area). So, volunteers must be comfortable with rudimentary accommodations that could include rustic camping, no electricity, no working restrooms, no running water, etc.

  3. Water Mission does not have funding to pay volunteer salaries. Utilities that have already sent volunteers (Mt. Pleasant Water and Charleston Water) covered the salary/benefits of their staff. Hopefully other utilities and companies will be willing to do the same. 

  4. Ideally, Water Mission would like to have two teams of two (four total) for a minimum two-week deployment. The volunteers do not all need to be from the same utility, but they do need to be able to work together for duration of the assignment. 

  5. Volunteers should have multiple skill sets such as water, wastewater, mechanics, basic electrical and a strong work ethic. Needless to say, each day brings new tasks and challenges and the days are not limited to eight hours. Volunteers should be aware that they are representing themselves, their utility and Water Mission while on assignment. A “Can-Do” attitude is necessary when bringing clean water and sanitation to people that have been without safe water for weeks.

  6. Water Mission provides some tools. However, volunteers are encouraged to bring their own basic hand tool sets for troubleshooting and repairing utility systems, as well as PPE.

  7. Water Mission staff will meet/talk with volunteers prior to the assignment, to provide information and answer any questions that they might have.

  8. All volunteers will be required to submit to a Background Check, medical information, and sign a volunteer liability waiver as well as Water Mission’s Code of Conduct.

  9. The situation on the ground is fluid. Current work assignments include installation and set-up of water treatment units, operation of the units, and working with the Bahamian Water and Sewage Co. to assess infrastructure, etc. Plus, as any good job description always says, "other duties as assigned.” Volunteers must be prepared to be flexible to do whatever is needed.

 

Some of the physical demands of the assignment include:

  • Must be able to spend extensive time outside in hot temperatures, high humidity.
  • Must be able to walk long distances or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be comfortable with unisex accommodations.
  • Must be extremely flexible and be comfortable with unknowns.
